If you are following this series, you probably already read Flight Planning Your Retirement (Pre-Flight) and Flight Planning Your Retirement (Enroute). If not, may I suggest you read them before continuing this post. In the prior posts I had related flight planning with retirement planning from the very start, implementation, and carrying you forward toward retirement and now we ready to start that approach.
Airline pilots actually start planning our arrival before we start to descend from our cruising altitude. Various countries have various rules we need to be familiar with as well as planing out the expected arrival path, approach and which runway to land on. As always, planning is key to ensure maximum efficiency and a safe arrival.
As you approach your retirement, your plan has hopefully progressed well, but changes may be needed to maximize a safe arrival. Some of you may switch to a more conservative approach, while others may prefer the “high speed” arrivals. No matter what course you choose, staying ahead of the game is what ensures your safe arrival.
Even as pilots approach their destination, weather and other factors still can prevent an on-time arrival. There are times when delays are due simply to a lot of traffic, other times when we actually have too much fuel to land. We may even have something come up which requires us to go around and try again. Constant tweaking of our plans are required all the way until touchdown.
In regards to your own planning, be prepared to act quickly as time is now working against you. You may encounter turbulent markets as we are seeing right now, you may even encounter “traffic”. Traffic, as I refer to here, is the “herd mentality” effects on the markets which could cause you to delay your retirement to recover. While you can only hope you have a “too much fuel” problem, there are ramifications of entering retirement with too much as well. Again, since time is against you, constant tweaking is required to keep your plan on track in its final stages approaching your retirement date.
When pilots finally get the plane on the ground, it is not always time to relax. Many times we are going to turn around and do another flight. So, once we arrive, we are already looking ahead to that next flight and starting the next plan. We are also taking care of maintenance and other issues to help the next crew prepare for their flight.
As you arrive comfortably at retirement, keep in mind also that you are not finished. Your next flight is your retirement years and those will require you to keep planning ahead to make them the most enjoyable, not to mention be able to pass your estate on to the next crew, preparing them for a safe journey towards their retirement.
